Adams County was established on January 22, 1800 from part of York County and named in honor of the second President of the United States, John Adams. The County encompasses a total area of 522 square miles and has a population of 91,292.
The County Seat of Adams County is Gettysburg. Gettysburg is well known for the Battle of Gettysburg fought from July 1st to July 3rd of 1863 during the Civil War. 172,000 American soldiers clashed in the Battle of Gettysburg, in what would prove to be a turning point of the Civil War. More men fought and more men died during the Battle of Gettysburg than in any other battle before or since on North American soil. On November 19, 1963, at the dedication of the Soldiers? National Cemetery in Gettysburg and four and a half month after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the historical Gettysburg Address.
Adjacent to the famous battlefield is Gettysburg College. Gettysburg College is a four-year liberal arts college which has about 2,600 students.
There are thirty-four municipalities in Adams County. The County consists of thirteen boroughs including Abbottstown, Arendtsville, Bendersville, Biglerville, Bonneauville, Carroll Valley, East Berlin, Fairfield, Gettysburg, Littlestown, McSherrystown, New Oxford, and York Springs. There are twenty-one townships including Berwick, Butler, Conewago, Cumberland, Franklin, Freedom, Germany, Hamilton, Hamiltonban, Highland, Huntington, Latimore, Liberty, Menallen, Mount Joy, Mount Pleasant, Oxford, Reading, Straban, Tyrone, and Union.
Major roadways running through the County include U.S. Route 15 and U.S. Route 30, which is also known as the Lincoln Highway.
The Adams County Courthouse is located at 111 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325. The Judges currently serving on the bench are President Judge John D. Kuhn, Judge Robert G. Bigham, Judge Thomas R. Campbell, and Judge Michael A. George.
