WGAL is reporting that an accident involving a horse and buggy occurred on Route 896 in Lancaster County on Wednesday morning. A car traveling southbound swerved into the northbound lane, hitting the horse and buggy head-on. After the collision, the horse and buggy rolled into a ditch, injuring all 5 passengers and killing the horse. The car hit a utility pole, injuring the driver. The accident occurred on an unusually busy Route 896 due to the tractor trailer accident on Route 30.

While horse and buggy accidents may not be common around the country, Lancaster County has a high occurrence. From 2004 through October of 2014, there were 302 horse and buggy accidents in Lancaster County. In that same time period, Mifflin County had the second highest number of horse and buggy accidents, with 37. It is believed that the volume of traffic in Lancaster County is what leads to those high numbers.
