Children Are Pedestrian Accident Victims

Sadly, in the past two days there were two pedestrian accidents in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that resulted in the deaths of a 2 year old boy and an 11 year old girl and injuries to a 6 year old boy. All 3 children were at home at the time of the accidents, but were struck by a truck in each instance. The 2 year old toddler was struck by a tanker truck backing into his driveway. The 11 year old girl and 6 year old boy were injured when a truck drifted out of his lane and struck them while in they were in their front yard.

Our hearts go out to all the families involved in these two tragic accidents. Accidents involving pedestrians, especially children, all too often have tragic outcomes. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is one crash-related pedestrian death every two hours in the United States. Those most at risk of injury or death, as cited by the CDC, are pedestrians ages 65 and older and children between the ages of 5 and 9.

Pedestrians can increase their personal safety by carrying a flashlight and wearing retro-reflecting clothing when walking at night; crossing only at crosswalks when available; and, walking facing traffic.
